Friday Things and Running Playlist

The Mustache Dache is tomorrow and I seem to have the exact same funky hamstring issue surfacing as I did last year at this time.  Sheesh, maybe it's a seasonal thing?  A few weeks ago I thought I'd totally have a 5K PR in the bag, but now I'm not so sure.  I've backed off speed work and long runs to keep the ache from turning into another issue that takes months to heal, so I think the Seattle Half tradition might not happen.  It's been well over a year since I had the opportunity to race a 5K (not just for fun), so I'm gonna give it my best and see what happens...  And then do a lot of resting and maybe another visit to my chiro once the new year starts/once we have money back in our flexible spending after the epic Children's Hospital stay.

Ah, one year ago!  OK, I've decided that there's a cool numerical theme of threes going on with this picture.  Three of these ladies became mothers/found out they were becoming mothers since last year.  And three of them have joined the Oiselle team.  And I'm pretty sure that there are three of us that are returning to run tomorrow.  WEIRD!  Good things come in threes, though, right?

So, interesting internet links this week...  I have to start with rebuttals of this much talked about Wall Street Journal article 'OK, You're a Runner, Get Over It.'  As a runner, yeah, it's kind of offensive: parade of one?  Noooo, I don't run outside so that people will see me - quite the opposite is true.  (I mean, we've all seen this meme, right?)  I personally don't have stickers on my car, but don't begrudge those that do - we have every right to be proud of that 13.1 or certainly those that have run 26.2.  I'm contemplating putting the Ragnar sticker on, though, just because I have such love for Ragnar.  And if I'd ever conquered 140.6, I might consider sewing a flag to fly in front of my house!  It's no worse than people being proud of their families and putting little stick figures on their cars, or divers with their little red squares with the white stripe, or political leanings, or your alma mater, your branch o'the armed forces, your honor student, your breed of dog, the list goes ON.  But, rants are funny, and I get that.  A lot of it is based in truth.  People give crossfit a ton of crap and I KNOW my friends that are into it would laugh at this meme, because it's kind of true!  And that's OK.  I think my favorite response is from teammate Lindsay Hein on all the ways to laugh at ourselves.  And really, I'm just surprised that the article wasn't on Buzzfeed or something of that nature.  Nooooot exactly hard hitting journalism there, WSJ...  Here's the Runner's World response and Competitor response.

More fun and uplifting tidbits from the internet this week:

While I was in Chicago, I had a major time-warp moment of nostalgia.  As I was getting dressed, I heard one of the most awesome old-school ditty playing on a tv commercial.  I think it was for Google Chrome?  Anyway, I don't think I've heard Move Your Feet in nearly a decade and knew I had to add it to the playlist.

  1. Thanks for sharing those article responses. The more I read, the better they continue to get!
Also, thanks for linking back to your 2012 Seattle Half recap/things learned. T-minus 2 weeks until my 2nd, and it was a nice reminder. I'm scared of the hills too, and wish I could run it for the first time again :)
