This Week's Eats 9.29.13

To celebrate eleven years of marriage, we hit up our favorite restaurant in all of Seattle.  If you're ever in town, we highly recommend Daniel's Broiler.  Being from Chicago, we know our steak joints well, and it's even better than a lot of places back home.  We're definitely one of those couples that falls into the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp.  We try a new place maybe once a year, usually on my birthday since it's in the summertime and the cozy steak joint feels more of a winter thing.  But, we've yet to find a place we love better.

Although I do discover new wine every time we go (Proletariat - yum) and even a new cocktail this time around.  I couldn't resist a lavender cosmo.

A note on last week's eats, I did not like the yakisoba recipe AT ALL.  The sauce was just not to my liking.  I did like the idea of buying a couple of ramen packages to use with stir fry, so we may do that from time to time.

  • Monday - Pizza
  • Tuesday - Basil Lime Chicken and Rice (this week's Pinterest experiment)
  • Wednesday - Applegate Farms Hot dogs and Alexia tater tots (we try to have easy and quick meals on Wednesdays, as it's soccer practice day)
  • Thursday - Barefoot Contessa Minestrone
  • Friday - Fish Tacos with Cilantro Lime Cream and Fixins
  • Saturday - Rigatoni with Arrabiata Sauce (In a dutch oven, saute about 1 cup chopped  yellow onion in olive oil until soft, add about 3 cloves of chopped garlic and 1/2 pound hot Italian turkey sausage, deglaze with a glug of white wine once the sausage is browned and add 28oz can crushed tomatoes, 8 oz tomato sauce, a can of tomato paste, a generous pinch or two of Kosher salt, pepper and crushed red pepper - let it simmer for at least a half an hour.)
  • Sunday - Alpine Chicken (Chicken breasts topped with swiss cheese, cream of mushroom soup thinned out with water, or a little white wine if ya want, and then cubed stuffing that's been tossed with a little butter. Bake at 350 for an hour, covered with foil for the first half hour - mmmm, cheesy baked goodness.)

I'm linking up with Mommy Run Fast and Jill Conyersbe sure to check out all the great weekly menus!

Eleven Years, Happy Anniversary to the Mister

The Mister doesn't get a lot of air time on the blog.  He's not a runner, gasp!  He's more of a hiker and is a bit on the introverted side, until you get to know him.  I was remiss in not celebrating him last year on our tenth anniversary, because I was enjoying my 20th High School reunion.  Yes, I could go on about how he's my biggest fan and supporter, or how he's truly my best friend - the first person I want to tell things to and the person I love to hang out with the most.  And how watching him become the most amazing dad to our children has made me love him that much more over the years.   But, I thought it'd be fun to share my maid and matron of honor's toast from our wedding eleven years ago, with a little commentary.  It pretty much sums us up still...

Both girls have artistic backgrounds (now careers) and helped create my programs, table cards, etc.  They printed out their toast on corresponding paper and gave it to me in a photo album of black and white pictures that they took over that weekend.  Yeah.

"Before we begin, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank Andrea and Sean for making us all a part of this great day.  Also, thanks to Diane and Evelyn [our moms] for everything you have done to make this day possible.
We've both known Andrea for over 15 years, and through that time we can honestly say that Andrea you've been a wonderful, true friend and we love you.
We have never seen Andrea happier than she is when she is with Sean.  It was so wonderful to see you both standing up there today.  We couldn't think of just one reason why Andrea and Sean make such a great couple, so we comprised a list of the Top Ten Reasons why they are a perfect match.

10. Andrea has expanded Sean's cultural experiences by introducing him to the fine art of the PowerPuff Girls cartoon, and the literary masterpieces of Harry Potter.  [We continue to love PowerPuff Girls, even introduced the kids to them.  And, yes, he didn't read HP until I sort of made him.]

Funny enough, he proposed the night of this Halloween party (2001) when I was dressed as PowerPuff Girl Bubbles.  We look like BABIES.

9. Sean has introduced Andrea to the fine world of interior design with his 3ft lava lamp and TV big enough to sleep in.  [We still have that damn lava lamp, but it's safely stored away for (hopefully) ever.  We've since upgraded televisons through the years for our obsessive movie watching - see #5]

8. They both understand the value of long lasting friendship.  Almost all of the wedding party has know either Andrea or Sean for more than a decade, and there's good reason for that. [I think I've mentioned before how much my longtime friends mean to me.  Mister is the same way.]

7. They both have a rather unhealthy obsession with the Japanese variety/cooking show Iron Chef. [Oh, how we miss the heyday of that show... But we can thank the heyday/beginning of the Food Network for our ongoing love of cooking.  Cooking together is where it's at, young married couples!]

6. Ever since that fateful night at Tequila Roadhouse, Sean's friends have reported unusual sightings of PDA. [Ha.  Yeah, this was a surprise to his friends - as I mentioned, he's on the introverted side.]

On our first (of many) trips to Vegas, friends caught this moment at a VIP booth in the Hard Rock nightclub.  He'd probably kill me for sharing this!
5. They're the only couple we know who makes a sport out of watching movies. [Still do, it's our Saturday ritual - cook, candlelight dinner, movies n' cocktails.  I look forward to it every week.]

4. They both have a deep respect and love for their mothers. [We both lost our dads when we were young and know what it's like to be raised by a strong single mother.]

3. They will be guaranteed to have someone to celebrate their heritage with on St. Patrick's Day (and you can still wear orange Andrea). [The orange comment is due to the fact that I'm Northern Irish (who wear orange in honor of William of Orange) and yes, we both have Irish roots and have named our children accordingly.]

2. Vegas baby, Vegas. [See above.  One of our favorite place on earth, next to a beach in Mexico.  We celebrated our first and third anniversaries there (we drove into Seattle on our second) and planned to every year, until I had to go and get knocked up.]

1. The number one reason why Andrea and Sean are the perfect match... their deep and committed love for each other. [Awww]

With that, let's all raise our glasses for a toast to Andrea and Sean and a lifetime of love and happiness!"

Happy anniversary honey, although you really don't read the blog.  Maybe I'll just send you this one post.

Friday Things

I'm feelin' lucky, lucky, lucky this Friday!  Yes, three times lucky (which, by the way, is the title of a book I want to read) because I just put three races on my calendar yesterday.  Whoa, three races planned in one day.  It would seem that I did get enough referrals from my Hot Chocolate Ambassador code for a trip to their race in the city of my choice. (!!)  Is it any surprise that I'd choose Chicago?  Whoop, whoop - I'm comin' home!  Thanks to everyone for using the code (SEAMUG1) for your local Hot Chocolate race, and keep on keepin' on with it to get your free travel mug.

Also, I found out that I won an entry to this year's Mustache Dache from the super awesome folks at Gametiime (yest that's with two i's).  They're a local startup website that helps you find races, but with cool things like profiles and wish lists. Go check them out if you're in Washington or Oregon, and check out The Mustache Dache.  I'm so glad I'll be joining in the fun again (here's last year's race report).

Lastly, I'm feeling so lucky that our Party Like a Flockstar team is officially signed up to revisit Ragnar Northwest Passage.  The excitement people, it's hard to contain.  I also listened to the latest Another Mother Runner Podcast during my run today.  They talk with the co-founder of Ragnar, and it was so fun and so funny - made me wanna run ALL THE RAGNARS.  I highly recommend giving it a listen if you, too, love Ragnar or are curious about it.

Other interesting and fun things I stumbled upon the internet this week:

  • Um, also, this video

I think this girl might just be about three years old, as her mannerisms remind me of my daughter.  I'm also wondering how this dad kept a straight face the whole time.  PRICELESS.  I don't ever want her to grow up!

Which brings me to my playlist song of the week.  The Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi (Remixed by Steve Aoki) was featured in the film Project X.  If you've seen this movie, you'll know why I really don't want my kids to grow up.  Alas, it's a fun song.

Happy weekend!

Finding Your Running Motivation

After Ragnar, and maybe even a little before, I went into some major run slump-age.  And as we all know from reading our Dr. Seuss, un-slumping yourself is not easily done.

August was a perfect shitstorm of mojo killing circumstances.  Tired, post-Ragnar legs?  Yep.  Family emergency? Yep.  Illness/horrible summer cold?  Yep.  Family vacation?  Yep.  For me, coming back from just one of these things is a pain, let alone all of them.  I'm in the throes of another horrible cold (yay, the school year has begun) so, I'm trying to remind myself how I got out of my August slump.  If you're dealing with any of these roadblocks, here are some things that helped me feel less slumpy.

Run faster!  Simple - yet, not so simple.  This was the hardest conclusion for me to reach on my road to motivation.  After being sidelined for more than a week, I usually feel the need to 'take it easy.'  The last thing I need is to get an injury.  But, I then I easily find myself in yet another rut of always running easy.  And running slow all the time makes me feel slow and afraid to attempt any kind of interval or tempo workout, for fear of failure.  Who exactly am I failing?  Myself, I suppose; and that's the worst.  However, throwing in some intervals or tempo miles can really be invigorating and reassuring.

didn't think I had any 7:xx paces in me right now, but I definitely dipped under an 8 minute pace for some 800s
I'm probably not the only runner who has a tendency to underestimate myself.  I worry too much about how slow my 'fast' paces might be.  Yet, once I put in some effort, I've been pleasantly surprised that the numbers on my Garmin are going in the right direction.  And there's not much that compares to getting into an awesome cycle of seeing improvement, which is motivating in and of itself to work harder and see change.  Huzzah!  Which leads me to...

New toys!  OK, so buying that brand spanking new Garmin pictured above is a bit extreme.  However, it's something that had been on my mind for, oh, at least two years and I had birthday money to spend.  And, it's been such a joy to do speed workouts outside.  WIN.

Or new clothes! Always a motivator, AMIRIGHT?  And it's a little bit easier on the wallet than a new GPS watch.  I always look forward to putting on beautiful new gear.  Right now I'm obsessed with my new Oiselle charcoal strappy bra.

I could also wear my bum wrap and new flyte tank all the livelong day
They took the original strappy and gave it some more coverage and compression.  It is so supportive and comfortable.  Not only are the straps super stylin' - they reduce pressure points along my shoulders.  I usually end up wearing my workout clothes for much of the day, and after a long one, the standard racer back bras begin to dig into my neck and shoulders.  Not conducive to happy running.

Change your route!  This is tough for me, because the best time to run is in the late morning while I have childcare at the Y.  I know the streets that surround it like the back of my hand, which can be nice when I want to run 'naked' and go for an easy six without said Garmin.  But it gets stale.  I've started running some of my routes backwards, or doing different workouts on different terrain.  For example, normally I do my tempo runs on a one mile loop that's relatively flat and has zero stoplights.  This week I did my tempo on a more scenic and hilly route, and it was tougher, but went by a LOT faster.

Make plans!  Another thing that has been hard for me to grasp, is that making plans and setting goals doesn't always have to revolve around a race.  Whoa.  What?!  I am loosely following a 10K plan to work on my speed and to maybe revisit the Sonohomish River Run 10K.  However, with my son having soccer through the end of October, it's been hard for me to fit in a race on my favorite race day - Saturdays.  And, kiddo's last game of the season is the same day as the 10K.  There's a possibility that I will be able to go home for the Chicago Hot Chocolate 15K, but things aren't set in stone, so it's hard to use either as motivation.  My main focus right now is to build up my speed, try to hit 20 miles a week, and get back to bootcamp at least once a week.  I've found that mileage goals are pretty motivating, as are hours or days per week - maybe even better for those that need more immediate gratification than a race that may be months into the future.

So nice to see the numbers goin' up, especially after big fat zero week 30

New Tunes!  Yes, there's a reason that I look for a new song every Friday.  Especially when you find a really great one that can be played on a loop for the entire workout.  Love it when that happens.

I can say for sure that I'm 100% un-slumped right now and I've had more good miles than bad, and that's an awesome feeling.  Now if I could just build myself a bubble to keep the elementary and preschool cold germs away, I'd be all set...

Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Muffins with Wheat Flour and Greek Yogurt + This Week's Eats 9.22.13

Since it's officially fall, I have caved to to the lure of pumpkin.  Thankfully, it has been cool, rainy and windy today.  Ahhh, perfect for watching some football and baking.  Here's my enlightened/adapted version of these Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Muffins:

Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Muffins with Wheat Flour and Greek Yogurt

makes 18 muffins

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
  •
1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  •
2 eggs
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons AP flour
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespooons whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (or milk, almond milk, etc.)
Topping
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and prepare 2 muffin tins with paper liners or coat with cooking spray.
  2. In the bowl of a standing mixer cream together the butter, yogurt and sugar until fluffy. Add the vanilla and eggs until well combined.
  3. Add the pumpkin and mix well.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add them to the pumpkin mixture and mix partially. Add the buttermilk and then mix the batter until smooth.
  5. Scoop the batter evenly among 18 prepared muffin liners. Sprinkle them generously on top with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  6. Bake the muffins 15 minutes and then let cool slightly before eating.

These taste (and smell) FANTASTIC.  I think they will be a big hit for school, and after-school, snacking.  By the way, the homemade Z Bars I tried last week just didn't turn out right for me.  They were more of a cake-y consistency than a chewy bar, and I'm not sure I'm a fan of protein powder in baked goods - this one left a weird aftertaste...

Friday Things

Yippee, the first round of school year colds is making it's way through our house!  So far it's just me and baby girl and we both seem to fall into the same cycle: wake up feeling horrible, go about the day and feel better (especially after a good sweat session), coast until late afternoon and then CRASH.  Bleh.  Thankfully, we have a nice and boring weekend ahead of us to recuperate.  On to Friday random tidbits:

1.  It's the semi-annual Brooks Truckload sale!  Local yokels, get some screaming deals.

2.  Kids are pretty much just tiny drunks.  Yeah, pretty much.

3.  Speaking of kids, this is fantastic read regarding all those people we know are the best parents on earth: people without kids.

4.  OK, juuuust in case you missed this gem, it's fantastic.  Surviving Whole Foods from HuffPo Comedy.  "...I'm not rich enough to have dietary restrictions."

5.  This is awesome:

Openly gay liberal lawmaker Carl M. Sciortino produced quite the fun tv ad with his Tea Party Republican father.

I'm adding Lose My Mind by Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso to the playlist - it's one of those songs that I thought was already on there, but I somehow missed it.

Speaking of playlists, here's Lauren Fleshman's latest post at Runner's World with her super hipster list.

Day in The Life

I've thought about doing one of these posts before, and now I have the perfect excuse with the link up that Jill and Angela are doing.  Without further ado, here's a thrilling 'typical' weekday in the life of this stay at home mom.

7-8:15AM:  Roll out of bed and make sure everyone (including myself) gets dressed, fed, and teeth brushed. I also mitigate many sibling fights, make big brother's lunch and get him to the bus.

9-11AM:  After the bus pickup, baby girl and I arrive at the Y for our exercise time (for me) and play time (for her).

ahhhh...

11-12PM: Errands, grocery shopping, etc.  If there's none of that on the agenda, baby girl and I spend time at a park, on a playdate or baking before lunch.
Second best part of grocery shopping: car carts! Best part?  Free cookies from the bakery.

12-1PM: Lunchtime and kitchen cleanup from the whirlwind of breakfast/lunch making.

1-2:30PM: Bath time for baby girl while I supervise from my adjacent shower and then laundry (or other crap that needs doing around the house) with my little helper.  I've always done baths for the kids during the day, because they're usually sweaty from the Y or the park and it opens up more quality time with Daddy in the evening.  We're still working on getting big brother to shower after dinner..

good times

2:30-3:30PM: Nap time/quiet time where I usually park it on the couch with some coffee and the computer, or a book, for about an hour.

If The Mister is working from home and his schedule is light, I get out for coffee and he takes over the schedule until bus pickup or later!

3:30-4:30PM: Rouse baby girl, get ready to pick up big brother from the bus and have after school snack.

4:30-5:30PM: Hang with big brother, mitigate sibling fights or try to calm the crazy play (depending upon the day, or minute).  Do homework and dinner prep.

5:30-6:30PM:  The Mister arrives home!  Pawn the kids off and finish dinner (or pawn the dinner off and go back to mitigating kids).  Eat dinner, try to finish homework.  Give thanks for the days we don't have soccer practice or swim lessons at this hour.  Once full day school starts, there just doesn't seem to be enough time left in the day...

Daddy time!

6:30-7:30PM: Watch a tv show of baby girl's choice, while hopefully getting big brother to shower, and put her to bed at 7pm.  Watch a tv show of big brother's choice and put him to bed at 7:30pm.  The Mister and I take turns on who has the bedtime duty of teeth brushing, flossing and book reading.

8-10:30PM: Ahhhhh.  Our book reading time, computer time, tv watching time or grownup dinner eating time and then it's off to bed before we start it all over again!

Like looking into other people's closets, it's fun to get a glimpse into other people's days.  What's your day like?  Link up here!

This Weeks Eats 9.15.13

I made it back to Veggie Grill last week and had a fabulous lunch with my mini.  She tried the chickn' nuggets and gobbled them up even faster than the tried and true mac n' cheese.  This seems to be the way of things with my daughter, she changes her mind quite frequently.  Once beloved foods become ones she won't touch with a ten foot pole.  This usually coincides with a trip to Costco, wherein I buy vast quantities of the beloved string cheese/yogurt/chicken nuggets, only to have her declare her disdain shortly thereafter.

Good thing she's so flippin' cute..

It's been two weeks of making school lunches and I'm beginning to feel rather grateful that my son is pretty much the opposite and has never become bored of his tried and true favorites.  Favorites that are super easy to throw together in the crazy, crazy mornings: peanut butter and honey sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, hard boiled eggs with crackers, or leftover pizza are pretty much the staples.  I usually throw in some fruit, snap pea crisps or chips, and a couple Trader Joe's Joe-Joes sandwich cookies.  After being a half day kindergartner, this is practically the highlight of his full day experience at school.  We also provide a snack every day and I've been buying Cliff Z Bars for this purpose, but am considering the Peas and Thank You homemade version.  Hopefully I'll have a report next week on how they went over!

Friday Things

Whoa, it's been a busy week of playdates, school meetings, soccer and general beginning of school year stuff.  I kinda liked doing bullet points for Friday Things last week, so I'm takin' it a step further and from now on I'm making a numbered list of all the great fun Friday things!  I know, I can feel your excitement.

1. I have got to start setting aside funds for Oiselle's Spring '14 line NOW.  This was such an exciting week for the company and I know that all of us team members are beyond proud and excited to see Sally and the crew become the first running apparel on the New York Fashion Week Runway.  Check it all out here.

And I think this is everyone's fave pic from the link above - Lauren's ABS! Yeah, her baby was born in JUNE.

I was pretty stoked to be one of the first Seattlites to give them all a round of hugs today, as I was stopping by the office!  Thanks JJ for being the social media expert you are, and finding a moment (where my daughter stopped talking) to take a picture of us.

Love my feather runfinity scarf, btw. So cozy and goes with EVERYTHING.  C'mon fall!

2. This video on an octopus camouflaging itself is INCREDIBLE.

4. Two Guys You've Never Heard of Just Released the Song of the Summer.  I just can't. even.  Tears, TEARS of laughter here.  A must see.

5. A Third Grader's List of Goals for the Year.  We can all learn a little something about goal setting from this youngster.

6.  Speaking of youngsters, Kid President's got another gem.  Mom upside down?  = WOW!

I heard this crazy Work Hard, Play Hard song on my Pandora yesterday and was all, HELL NO.  Just, NO.  Better Off Alone by Alice Deejay is a classic that should not be messed with - the song Wiz Khalifa butchered sampled.  Add this to your playlist for sure.

Happy weekend!
